Children’s insurance – a review of information and compensation

2008-05-14 | Reports Consumer Insurance

Parents who have a seriously ill child are entitled to compensation through the Swedish Social Insurance Administration. Those who choose temporary parental benefits can jeopardise their right to compensation from their child’s sickness and accident insurance.

There is a risk that youths who have lost their working capacity may have to wait an unnecessarily long time for invalidity benefits from their sickness and accident insurance.

Fl will take the following measures

We propose that the Swedish Consumer Agency review the companies' insur-ance conditions for sickness and accident insurance for children. We also urge the insurance companies to clarify in their information the fact that parents' choice of compensation from the Social Insurance Administration will affect the financial cover of the insurance.

The insurance companies should also review the possibility of making more independent assessments regarding compensation for economic invalidity for youth. The companies currently wait for the Social Insurance Administration's decision which leads to unnecessarily long waiting periods.

The investigation

We have reviewed nine insurance companies' pre-purchase information and in-surance conditions regarding: 1) compensation for the care of seriously ill children depending on the type of compensation from the Social Insurance Administration, and 2) the criteria to assess economic invalidity in sickness and accident insurances for children.

Complaints about sickness and accident insurances for children have increased by 70 per cent since 2004, according to the Swedish Consumers Insurance Bureau. We have chosen to review the consumer protection for this type of insurance due to the increase of complaints and the companies' approach to the Social Insurance Administration's rules.
