FI’s Views on Stronger Competitiveness in European Capital Markets, Future Supervision and AI
Jimmy Kvarnström, Head of the Markets Area, participated in the European industry association Eurofi’s Financial Forum in Dublin on 16-18 September. The event focused on issues high on the EU agenda: how to make Europe’s capital markets more competitive, how financial supervision should evolve in the future, and how AI is transforming the financial sector. In two articles published in the organisation’s magazine, Jimmy Kvarnström outlines some of the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority’s (FI) perspectives on these topics.
The first article discusses how Europe can strengthen its capital markets to increase investment and improve companies’ access to financing. The EU should remove cross-border barriers while building on existing strengths. Experiences from Sweden and the Nordic region demonstrate, among other things, the importance of broad investor participation, active ownership, and well-functioning market structures. Greater harmonisation and centralisation can contribute where they create clear European added value.
The second article focuses on autonomous AI agents in the financial sector. The technology offers significant opportunities, but as AI systems gain a greater ability to make decisions and act independently, the demands for governance, traceability, and control also increase. Firms may delegate tasks and decision-making to AI, but not responsibility for actions taken in their name. Financial supervision must also evolve in step with technological developments.
